Hey Guys,

So these past few weeks were like a dream, literary since we were busy shooting Pakistan's biggest TV channel Hum TV's drama serial Mata e Jaan in New York. The drama is being directed by one and only Mehreen Jabbar. Not only it was an honor to work under Mehreen as an Assistant Director but it was a dream come true for me since I have always dream of making movies and tell stories. This passion of storytelling is reflected in our work on weddings as well where we don't just take pictures with people shouting cheese but we try to tell the story of a couple by capturing the little details of the day.

I want to thank everyone who took the time out and made an EFFORT to nominate someone special for this contest! Honestly, it was very very difficult to make the final decision and choose just one winner :( After careful consideration I narrowed it down to 2 nominations and could not decide on just one. so I thought WHY choose just one? :D yes, thats right, there are TWO winners for this giveaway!

So the first winner is SANNA and the second winner is AYUB KHAN!

The first winner, SANNA was nominated by her sister AMINA. I chose Sanna because I could relate to her in many ways. At one point in my life I, too,was dealing with self-esteem issues and wished a million times that someone could lift me up and take me out of that hole. I was very shy and kept to myself most of the time. I believe we all need that 'push' from someone as we go through our teenage years and try to find our own place in the world. Taking up photography was that 'push' for me. It gave a huge boost to my confidence and changed me inside out as a person. I'm still not quite there yet :) but read her story below to know why I selected Sanna as one of the winners:

SANNA

"I just saw this giveaway and i got so excited because i would like to nominate my sister, Sanna. I feel she deserves this so much because she is such a beautiful person inside and out but sometimes she doesnt feel that beautiful. I know this will higher her self-esteem and make her feel very important. Her skin does have alittle acne and she feels insecure about her nose and we all tell her she is beautiful but sometimes you need that speacial push or change in life. When she was younger she was always skinny and shy so noone outside paid much attention to her it was always me or my brothers, and now having a daughter and being a mother i feel even more emotional. She is already interested in makeup and wants to become a makeup artistt so i know she can learn a few tricks fromRabia. I had such beautiful wedding/walima pictures and i want Sanna to also feel the way i did that day. At times when the whole world seems against you, you have that special person who is always there and in my case its my sister. I havent been able to ever give her the best birthday or Eid gift and if she wins this giveaway i know it would mean the world to her and she would love me more :) She works hard in college and home so it would be a great change in her teen life that she would always remember :) My family and me respect you alot and you did alot for me even being a stranger you made me always feel like you were a sister, so thanks for that and i know you have two sisters and without them we are incomplete so please do consider my sister and give us a chance again to work with you!"

The other winner, Ayub Khan, was nominated by his lovely wife Uswah Khan. I have tremendous respect for people who follow their dreams and don't give up no matter how many obstacles come their way. I don't know what else to say :) read on to know why I chose him as a winner :)

AYUB KHAN

"I'm nominating my husband. Not because hes my husband, but because hes the most hardworking, dedicated, caring individual Ive seen. He never complains, theres always smile on his face and hes ready to tackle all of lifes hurdles no matter how difficult. Out of everyone I know, hes most deserving in my eyes. He decided when he was young that he wanted to be a doctor. Now, after completing medical school, after having passed his board exams, he has had some unsuccessful attempts at obtaining residency. He doesnt give up though. Two years ago, he went on a countrywide quest to look for a research position, after receiving no replies to his numerous emails and letters to directors searching for research. He went door to door, in person and met with residency directors from Connecticut to New York, New Jersey to Pennsylvania, and finally he found an open door in Ohio. He had to be away from his children who he adores, and dedicated himself to clinical research with patients who suffer from diabetes, cholesterol, and women with PCOS. Besides getting well wishes from the patients he sees, and God Bless yous, his hard work has paid off physically. One of the studies he worked on was published in the American Journal of Cardiology (not an easy task to accomplish ask any doctor who would tell you how selective the American Journal of Cardiology is), and he was a recipient of the Travel Trainee Award for one of his abstracts presented to the Central Society for Clinical Research American and Federation for Medical Research (CSCR & MW AFMR). At their meeting in Chicago of 2010, 4 of his abstracts were selected for presentation. Not only has he been doing research, he is taking classes at the University of Cincinnati for their clinical and translational research program. I am so proud of him for continuing to make a difference to field of medicine. He is still waiting to hear back from hospitals to see if he has been accepted into a residency program, so he can be licensed, but while he waits, he doesnt waste a minute of his time. He helps random strangers on the street; he helped a man and his family whose car was stuck in the snow. Hes a surrogate father so to say to a child with bi-polar disorder and cystic fibrosis whos seen 17 different foster families in his 14 years of life. Anytime people call for advice on medications, he takes out his time to speak with them, and give them guidance to better their health. He either makes renovations to his house, (recently he helped his brother during his house renovation), and he will be going back from break to his research. As a hobby, he loves to take photographs, and always has us pose in remarkable ways to make sure our best pictures come. Unfortunately, I cant reciprocate his picture taking skill. However, I know that a photo shoot focusing only on him, getting his pictures professionally taken will be a way to say thank you and I appreciate all that you do. And not just a thank you from me, but from the community as a whole who hes always ready to assist and give back to. He may not be your traditional candidate, but I bet a secret desire of his would to be a male model, and while he may have been married 14 years ago, he can pose as a newlywed groom anytime! 14 years ago, when we were married, our parents were both immigrants, and our weddings were amongst the first of both families. We didnt know about the concept of hiring a photographer to take wedding photos. Our wedding pictures are a conglomeration of friends and family taking shots here and there. So yes, it would not only be a great gift to him to have him pose on his own, but would be a nice belated anniversary gift to finally have professional photographs taken."

Congratulations to you both! It is an honor for us to get a chance to take your pictures which you will cherish for life!

Thaakat Foundation Rutgers- 'We Clean Up Nice'

Laaj Studios recently had the opportunity to become a part of a very special event. On December 4th, Rutger's Thaakat Foundation in collaboration with Rutger's CARE organized a fundraiser for 'We Clean Up Nice'. 100% of the proceeds were donated towards the 'Put it in the Can Project', which will assist approximately 3,500 people in the adopted village of Gutwala, Pakistan to sustain their lives.

The night was full of fun, with comedy act by Abbas Rattani, fashion show by Alina & Amor,
Resham Collection (Ashi's Boutique), FNK ASIA & Profound Aesthetic. Makeup for the models by Rabia of Laaj Studios, DJ T was running the tracks and great performances by DIYA, Emil K. Parikh & RUDE, and our very own Dhoom Bros! Catering was provided by Taj Banquet.

We've been blessed yet again...

Today, Khurram and I are very excited to share with you all the pictures of our newborn son! We were blessed yet again with a beautiful healthy baby boy 7 weeks ago! We had totally forgotten how awesome it was to hold a tiny baby in our arms again. There is no other feeling like it! And seeing our 5 year old daughter so in love with him melts our hearts <3 <3 We just can't thank God enough for all the blessing he has showered upon us! :)

So we did his session when he was 7 days old which is the best time to get a newborn photographed. If any of you are planning to get their newborn photographed, plan ahead so the session is scheduled when the baby is between 5-10 days old. Babies are easy to photograph at this stage because they are asleep most of the time, are less fussy and of course the curled poses look so so cute!

It is just mind boggling...

I've been watching the news constantly for the past few days and only one question arises in mind over and over again. HOW CAN VIOLENCE BE AN ANSWER TO ANYTHING? It is just very very disturbing to see how many innocent people all over the world are being killed on a daily basis while the world watches and does nothing to stop it. I will never understand why is it okay to kill people from a certain religion or race and the killers are not labeled as "terrorist" but are people who are "defending" themselves. My only point is that violence can and will never achieve peace in the world, ever! There is no winning side in a war. Innocent people on both side pay with their lives. I pray from the bottom of my heart that we as human beings learn to be more tolerant and to not to just take a stand when it is effecting just "our own kind" but learn to be compassionate toward all regardless of their race or religion! Ameen!

First and foremost, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year!! I hope and pray that this would be a safe and prosperous year for us all!!!

Wow!! it has been a while since I last blogged. But here I am again. Let me start with the good news. I'm very excited to announce that our new web site went live on new year's day. It was long over due! I know. And I had been working on it for more than 6 months!!! I had a certain vision and "look" that I wanted to achieve and that is the biggest reason for the delay. There were times, I have to admit when I was so overwhelmed at the thought of achieving what I had in my mind that I had to just step away from it for a while. But after all the sleepless nights I'm quite happy with the final result. There will be a few changes/additions in the next coming days so please look out for that and I do request everyone to to please provide some feedback. I frequently come accross brides and grooms who dread sitting on that stage only for one reason. And the reason is mithayi (sweets), that is forced down their throats by all the guests one by one. Such was on recent bride who could not believe how much mithayi was fed to her the pervious night on her mehndi and wondered if there was a way out of this for any one getting married. And the good news is, YES. There is definitely alternatives to mithayi which not only look good when displayed, but taste good too. And the best part...they are not coated with tons of sugar! so you don't have to worry about gaining extra pounds. Read on for some inspirational ideas...

Hair Care - All natural

Hair masks are as important as face masks. We’ve damaged our tresses blow-drying, using flat irons, used harsh chemical to color the hair, and lets not forget the pollution in the air which makes our hair dull and dry. We have to replenish what has been stripped away. Below are few of the ways that can be achieved.

Oil Massaging

The best way to replenish the oils in the scalp is oil massaging. You can massage the scalp with coconut, almond or olive oil. Slightly warm the oil in microwave for a few seconds before massaging, that way the scalp will absorb it better. Remember to massage with finger tips, not nails, otherwise you will damage your scalp. You don’t have to leave the oil in your hair overnight. Cover with hot towel and leave it in for just 30-40 minutes then wash hair with shampoo and don’t forget to use a good conditioner afterwards. It is the best method to cure dandruff in your hair as well. Oiling once a week is important.

Coconut Milk

Personally I like to use coconut milk because it is easier to rinse from hair. Plus it not only nourishes the scalp but promotes hair growth as well. Just take enough coconut milk to massage the scalp. Do warm it up in the microwave for a few seconds. Leave it in for 30 minutes then wash your hair. You don’t have to use shampoo but if you want you can. You will immediately see how healthy and full of life each strand of hair looks instead of squeaky clean, lifeless, and dull. By the way, hair should never be squeaky clean, if it is then you’ve stripped away the essential oils from your scalp.

Egg

Egg gives hair shine and bounce.

For oily hair: Whisk an egg, add ½ tsp lemon juice, massage your scalp and leave it in for 30 minutes. Wash hair with shampoo and condition.
For dry hair: Whisk an egg, add olive or almond oil, massage the scalp and leave it in for 30 mins. Wash hair with shampoo and condition.

It is important that you don’t wash your hair with hot water. Otherwise, you’ll “cook” the egg and you will need additional washing.

Henna- Hair color and conditioner in one!

Henna is my favorite conditioner! There are many reason. First, it gives a beautiful color to hair without those harsh chemicals. I’ve stopped coloring my hair any other way. Secondly, it nourishes the hair naturally.

To prepare henna paste first boil some water and add a 2-3 tea bags. Remove the bags from water in 2-3 minutes. Cool the water and use it to mix henna. Add an egg to this mixture. I also like to add 1 tsp lemon. Mix everything well and apply to hair from root to t1p with gloves on otherwise it will stain your hands. Apply henna paste to clean, dried hair only. Make sure to apply a face cream so the henna doesn't leave color on your forehead and around your ears. Leave it on for 1 hour and rinse hair with water and don't shampoo. Your hair is going have a beautiful color and shine right after. I love to use henna! :)

Tea water - Beautiful natural color

Boil some water and throw in 3-4 tea bags. Remove the bags once tea is mixed in water. Give your hair a final rinse with this tea water and don't rinse with plain water afterwards. Your hair will have a beautiful rich color.

Lemon - for shine

After shampooing and conditioning, give your hair a final rinse of lemon diluted in water. Don’t rinse with plain water afterwards. It will give a natural beautiful shine to your hair.

Don’t forget that the key to achieving the best results from these tips is that you use them regularly. Doing once is not enough. Use these methods at least once a week to get beautiful healthy hair for life.

Home Made Facial Masks

In this post I will discuss a few ways you can make facial masks at home which are as effective as getting a facial from a spa without spending hundereds of dollars each year. I will also include a few tips from a guest on Nadia Khan Show, Rima Soni. She is a beauty consultant based in Dubai and specialize in treating skin with natural ingredients.

Dry Skin
Egg yolk, few lemon drops, 1/2 tsp honey, 1/2 tsp of olive or almond oil. Mix well and apply on skin, avoiding eye area ofcourse. Wash with cool water when mask is dry. This mask also tightens the skin!

Oily Skin

Egg white, 1/2 tsp honey, with few lemon drops. Apply on skin and wash with cool water when mask dries.

Acne

Egg yolk can be applied on skin to heal blemishes. You can also try 1 tsp cinnamon powder mixed with honey. Apply and leave it on for 1 hour every day. Wash with cool water. This mask will start to dry the pimples without drying the skin.

Dull Skin

Egg yolk, 1/2 tsp honey, 2 drops lemon juice, and almond powder. Mix and apply on skin. Wash with cool water when dry. It will exfoliate the skin.

For Open Pores

1 tsp lemon, 1/2 tsp honey, dilute with water

1 tsp tomatoe juice, 1/2 tsp honey and apply on skin for 30 minutes. Wash with cool water

Sooth Tired Skin and Clear Acne Marks

Yogurt mixed with oats powder. Make a paste and apply on skin. Wash with cool water when mask is dry.

Facial Scrub

Mash strawberries, add almond powder to make a paste. Apply to skin, wash when the mask dries.

Skin Whitener

Strawberries also work as a skin whitener. You can also rub raw papaya on your skin to whiten.

Toner

Rose water can be applied to skin as a toner. It is very inexpensive plus it smells really good.

NATURAL CLEANSER - GET THE GLOW!

I have always believed in the old natural ways for skin care rather than using harsh face washes and masks. Try these trick to liven up dead dull skin and get the glow without spending a fortune! The ingrediants can be easily found in your own kitchen...

Lets start with a cleanser. My personal recommendation for a cleanser is...Yogurt!

Yes, its true...yogurt is the best face wash out there...well you can also use milk but I prefer yogurt because it is easier to apply (by the way I heard that Cleopatra used to bath in milk...hmmm...I bet she had the softest skin). Anyway, every morning massage your face with yogurt for a minute or so and then wash it off with water...you will see the difference immediately...........it leaves your skin soft and smooth and the best part... you will love this one...it won't dry out your skin :))

Yogurt can also be used as a mask, especially in summer when the skin is exposed to harsh sun. Leave the yogurt on your face for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it off. You can use this mask every day if you like.

On November 3, 2007 I had a chance to cover a beautifuly organized colorful event. It was Rayqa's mehndi night. Rayqa wore a beautiful shalwar kameez which was simple yet perfect for the night's event. She looked radiant! though a bit nervous at the beginning of the event. As the night passed she relaxed and started to enjoy all the dancing and music that was around her. I had so much fun covering her mehndi as well as the wedding on November 4th. Signing the contract

I recently had an experience which I want to share with everyone, especially with the brides-to-be looking to sign contracts with different vendors. Please do not assume that you’ve been confirmed just because you gathered the information from a certain vendor. You can call, or walk in, to speak to a vendor, gather the necessary information and leave without signing the contract, thinking that you need more time to make a decision. While, someone else can walk right after you left, like what they see, and decide to leave the deposit and sign the contract immediately. Should the vendor wait for the other client to make the decision, not even sure if the client will definitely get their services, and say ‘No’ to someone who is ready to sign the dotted line immediately? This is not how businesses are run. It is always on first come first served basis. Here is what happened:

I was contacted by a few brides-to-be on different occassions who were interested in Laaj Studios’ services for their wedding. There was one thing common among them which was their wedding date. I provided them all with the necessary information. We went back and forth with questions and asnwers, exchanged a few emails. One day, someone else contacted me for the same date and before I hung up the phone she asked to sign the contract. I still had not heard anything from the other parties in days. I emailed her the contract right away, which she signed, and mailed it back to me with the 25% deposit which is required to confirm all bookings!

As soon as I received the signed contract and the desposit check, I emailed the other brides-to-be and informed them that I’ve been booked for the dates they were looking for.
This is where it gets ugly. One of them contacted me and demanded to know why I had signed a contract with someone else while I had provided her with the package detail first. I tried explaining to her that I get calls from potential clients everyday. Some are already gathering information from different vendors even when their wedding date is not until 2009. I wanted to make it clear that just because I provided her with information regarding our services does not mean that she was booked. In order to confirm all bookings, the contract must be signed and 25% non-refundable deposit is required. She kept insisting that I had been unprofessional because I had signed a contract with someone else, while still in talks with her. I just couldn’t not get through to her. She hung up threatning that she will ruin my reputation and tell everyone how unprofessional I was.

My advice to all of you:
1. Please do not assume you’ve confirmed a vendor just by gathering information from them

2. If you really like a vendor do let them know. Make sure you make is clear that you are definitely interested in their services and not just shopping around

3. Sign the contract as soon as you can. Don’t rush into it ofcourse! but make sure you inform the vendor how interested you are in their service

Choosing the right photographer

While choosing the right photographer for your wedding you need to keep in mind the photographer's style and personality.

First, decide whether you like traditional, posed, or photojournalistic photography. Look for a photographer who portrays the style you are looking for. You must love the photographer's style. If you don't like the pictures, you should not consider him/her just because of the price tag. Secondly, make sure that you feel comfortable with the photographer who will be covering your event. It is very important that you are at ease with the individual who is going to be around you and your family members on your big day.
